Adkins was born to a single mother of just a few years who was raised in various working class London areas. She was an avid singer of contemporary pop music as a child , and was able to play the guitar and clarinet. It wasn't until she was in her teens that she was introduced to Etta James, a r&b singer, as well as other performers in the late 20th century when she began to think about a future career in music. She was enrolled in an academy for performing and visual arts that was funded by the federal government. A friend uploaded songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. Her work was quickly discovered by record labels and signed a contract with XL Recordings in 2006.
